There has been a nationwide uproar over the soon to be president Donald Trump. After Trump won early Wednesday morning with well over 270 Electoral Votes and Hillary under 270, there has been some chaos. Trump took many of the swing states like Ohio, Florida, North Carolina, and even Wisconsin. Since then, there has been many protests and acts of disapproval across the nation, especially in strongly democratic states. Many people have been taking their voice to social media such as Twitter and Facebook using the hashtag “#NotMyPresident.” There has also been some riots in the streets.

On the night of the election, the Canadian immigration website was seeing increase activity as Trump’s chances became better and better. There was over 200,000 users on the website around 11:00 p.m. EDT when it began experiencing issues. Of the 200,000, over 100,000 of those users were from US internet addresses. At the same time previous week, there were only 17,000 users on the site. Well over 50% of the sites traffic was coming from the United States. Normally Americans only make up between 8% to12% of its traffic, according to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada, which is the Canadian version of what in the U.S. is the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services.

Since the presidential election night, the site is now up and running. Whether or not all those Americans are really immigrating to Canada is yet to be determined. Permanent residents typically needs family in the country or a specialized skill profession/business connection. All we can do now is hope for the best.
