    Moana: Independent Princess

    Moana%3A+Independent+Princess

This film tells the tale of a young island princess named Moana Waialiki living in ancient Polyneisa. She is the only daughter of a chief in a lengthy ancestry of navigators. After a frightful curse is brought upon by Maui after stealing the heart of the ocean, Moana sets out on a journey of perils and misfortune to find the demigod and bring back life to the islands.

Disney released “Moana” to the public on November 23, 2016. This highly regarded film received an 8.3 out of 10 on IMDb and a 98% on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics praise Disney for their integration of an independent princess, breaking the trend that has been set by years worth of male reliant women in animated films. As said in the New York Times review of this film, “Moana, bantering with Maui like a rival sibling and borne on her journey by the spirits of the ocean and her grandmother, has no need of a prince.” “Moana” has also been applauded for its terrific music, which has greatly deviated from Disney’s usual soundtracks and brought a very original element to this film. Lin Manuel Miranda, writer and voice actor of “Hamilton”, created the soundtrack for this film. In doing so, he incorporated many elements he used in his musical theater production, such as his rap and R&B influences.

I saw “Moana” on its release date and would highly recommend it to anyone who may be interested in seeing this movie. I personally enjoyed everything this film had to offer and love the diversity of music and characters Disney is including into their more recent movies. “Moana” is one to remember.
