United Airlines is the spark of a hot controversy after Twitter user Shannon Watts tweeted on Sunday that a gate agent wasn’t letting girls wearing leggings board a flight from Denver to Minneapolis. She continued to say that the agent forced the girls to change or put dresses on over the leggings, otherwise they would not be permitted to board the flight. According to the airline’s passenger contract, United has the right to refuse service to “passengers who are barefoot or not properly clothed.”

Celebrities such as Seth Rogen and Christine Teigen chimed in, along with hundreds of regular citizens, to criticize United’s random and inconsistent enforcement of the bizarre rule. United’s responses to these tweets reiterated the facts that “Casual attire is allowed as long as it looks neat and is in good taste for the local environment” and that the passengers in leggings were “not in compliance with the dress code policy for company benefit travel.” The problem that people have with this is that there is no definitive guidelines about what is or is not in “good taste” for the environment, so it’s basically just up to the gate agents to decide what can and can not be worn on the flight.

Because of this incident, many people have said that they will be taking their business elsewhere and will be supporting airlines that let passengers wear what they please. United Airlines’ rival, Delta, tweeted on Monday, “Flying Delta means comfort. (That means you can wear your leggings.)”
