This year the Lakewood girl’s basketball team accomplished something outstanding. The girls were district champs, and advanced to the regional semifinals. This hasn’t happened in Lakewood since 95, so this was a very big deal not only for the team , but the city as well. After winning the district championship the ladies had to go head to head with a team from their past: Berea Midpark.

The ladies played them during the season twice and were defeated both times. The first round the Rangers were in the lead going into halftime, they were up by 17. Berea brought the game home winning 49-45. The second round the Rangers were missing a key component in this game, their starting 6 footer: Olivia Nagy. She was a huge component to this team especially since Berea had a 6 footer as well. It was devastating not having her but the girls fought.

They came up short 58-47 it was a tough loss. Olivia averaged 12.6 points each game. Advancing to the regional semis the ladies got some devastating news. They were told Olivia Nagy wouldn’t be able to play due to a sickness. This was hard to hear but Olivia texted the ladies and told them she’d be sitting on the sideline cheering them on every minute.

When asked about how it felt not being able to play in the game Nagy said this “It was hard not being able to play for the regional semifinals. In a way I felt like I was letting my team down, but I had complete confidence in them, and I was proud of all of the hard work they put in it.”

Only a junior Nagy has one more year of high school basketball. She’ll be back on the court with her team hoping to bring more championships home to the wood.
