11 Hospitalized After Ohio State Attack

    11+Hospitalized+After+Ohio+State+Attack

Earlier this week, national and local new services alike were fervently reporting on the attack the occurred late Monday morning at Ohio State University.

At 9:50, Ohio State student, Abdul Artan drove into a group of fellow students walking outside of the university’s Watt Hall building with his car. Artan had been armed with a butcher knife and shortly thereafter began to stab those who had happened to have been passing by Watt Hall at the time.

Within minutes after the crash and subsequent knife attacks, a campus police officer fatally shot Artan. Though the situation was shut down immediately, the Ohio State campus remained on lockdown for several hours on Monday as rumors that it had been three shooters that executed the attack spread quickly across the large university. Students in their dorms or barricaded classrooms began marking themselves as “safe” on Facebook in incredible volumes during the lockdown much like had occurred during the Paris attacks last year.

There is no evidence that Artan, a Muslim Somali refugee, was motivated by any radical religious ideologies or had any connections to radical Islamic groups, and many who knew Abdul Artan were shocked to hear of his attack, describing him as being “a good student and a good kid.”

Before leaving for Watt Hall that morning, Artan was reported to have made a Facebook post expressing the rage he felt for continued mistreatment of Muslims across the world. Last summer as well in a student profile article in the university’s paper, The Lantern, Artan cited being disappointed and disgusted that the public perception of Muslim individuals in the US caused him to fear and avoid praying in public. Many speculate perhaps this tragic attack on the students of OSU may have been the outcome of a breakdown by Artan.

Thankfully though, the eleven students and faculty members that fell victim to Artan are all in stable condition currently.
