The hilarious R-rated movie “I,Tonya,” takes place in the 1990s, centered around the life and figure skating career of Tonya Harding. Tonya Harding was the first American woman to complete a triple axel during a competition. The movie reveals that she surprised the judges not only with her skill, but with her unique, daring, and inappropriate behavior.

This dark comedy tells the tragic story that ruined Tonya’s chances of making the 1994 U.S. Olympic team. The movie opens with Tonya, her ex-husband, his best friend, and her mother being interviewed. The movie is a fake documentary, although the character’s interviews are based off of the real ones. The movie mocks her for her reputation of being a hillbilly from a poor, broken family, while focusing on the fact that all she has is her passion for skating.

Tonya faces road block after road block and can’t seem to catch a break. She does not finish high school, she marries young and manages to escape her abusive mother, only to be abused by her new temporary husband. Her crazy ex-husband later conspires a plan to injure Nancy Kerrigan, one of Tonya’s toughest opponents.

After a short investigation the FBI gets involved and Tonya is forced to withdraw from the national championships. The movie makes fun of Tonya’s life and tarnished legacy as she is forever associated with one of the most infamous scandals in sports history. Rather than emphasizing the terrifying and tragic components of the story, the directors chose to take the overlooked details regarding Tonya’s personal life to create a comedy.
