National Anthem Rendition Gone (Terribly) Wrong

Fergie was left asking, “where is the love?” after her performance of the National Anthem at the 2018 NBA All Star game on February 19th. Unfortunately for the ex-Black Eyed Peas singer, her rendition left many scratching their heads.

The singer put her own flair on “The Star Spangled Banner,” but it did not catch on with viewers as it sparked snickers from across the crowd.

During the performance, several basketball players and stars in attendance, including Chance the Rapper, Draymond Green, Steph Curry, LeBron James, and Jimmy Kimmel, were all spotted smiling and laughing as Fergie belted her way through the anthem.

“I’ve always been honored and proud to perform the national anthem and last night I wanted to try something special for the NBA….I honestly tried my best,” states Fergie in a statement obtained by the Daily News. Kimmel explained his smirks during Fergie’s “unusually sultry” rendition were because he “loves the Anthem so much.”

He also responded to Fergie’s apology about “taking risks” and responded, “When it comes to the National Anthem…don’t…just regular is fine.”

The unconventional performance quickly sparked criticism on social media as millions across the country posted reactions as Fergie sang. Numerous viewers hit Twitter to share opinions, with a few calling it the “worst rendition ever”(though one argued that Roseanne Barr’s intentionally bad performance at a 1990 San Diego Padres baseball game was worse).

The 65-year-old Roseanne star added to the fire via Twitter in a tweet stating, “Who saw Fergie’s national anthem performance at the NBA All Star Game? I think mine was better lowkey.”

Hopefully Beyoncé will be in our National Anthem performance future…
