On March 11, a 4-year-old child, Aniya Day was taken to Euclid hospital after her mother, Sierra Day, and her mother’s boyfriend, Deonte Lewis, called 911. When police arrived Aniya was unresponsive and pronounced dead at the hospital. During the call, Deonte Lewis stated “She is breathing but she is having a hard time breathing” than Sierra Day was put onto the phone and said that she is “not breathing.” Neither Sierra or Deonte seemed to be in a panic during this call.

Aniya’s father, Mickhal Garrett was trying to get custody of Aniya for more than four years. He has written letters about how he feels that Aniya is being abused physically at home. Anyia’s daycare had reported 14 different incidents of abuse to the state child welfare officials. The case was open and being investigated but they said that there was not enough evidence to remove Aniya from her home.

After Aniya was taken to the hospital she suffered from a stroke due to blunt force trauma to the head. She also showed signs of malnourishment and weighed only 29 pounds. Police stated that Aniya had burn marks in her legs and feet and bruise on her left eye.

Sierra Day and Deonte Lewis are being charged with aggravated murder and have a bond of $1 million each. They are both pleading not guilty.
