On Tuesday, April 17, a toddler accidentally shot her pregnant mother with her father’s handgun outside of a store in Merrillville, Indiana, reports the Indy Star.

The father was inside of the store, Plato’s Closet, while the 3-year-old, her mother, and her 1-year-old brother were out in the parking lot and waiting in the car. The man, identified as Menzo Brazien, was later taken into custody and has a preliminary charge of child endangerment, says NBC Chicago.

The pregnant woman, Shaneque Thomas, was shot between her chest and shoulder. This also led to “blood flowing all from her stomach; just coming out like water, like a faucet,” according to one of the store’s employees, Hadassah Zirkle. Another worker then proceeded to call 911.

“She had no idea what she had done and she was very scared,” said Detective Sgt. James Bogner, explaining that the young girl had no intention of harming her mother. Her and her brother are now in the custody of the Indiana Department of Child Services, but, before police arrived, Zirkle took the two into the store to keep them out of the chaos outside.

Paramedics then took the woman, who is six weeks pregnant, to a local emergency room in Methodist Hospitals Southlake Campus. She was later moved to Loyola University Medical Center in Hines, Illinois. She is said to be in critical condition, though she is stable.

The couple is from Michigan City but came to the area to visit a Planned Parenthood located in the town.
