This past Sunday, April 29, 2018, in the Pasadena Civic Auditorium in California at 5pm (pacific time zone) the Daytime Emmy Awards were presented. It was hosted by Mario Lopez (from “Extra”), and Sheryl Underwood (“The Talk”).

The awards ceremony were not broadcasted on TV, instead were streamed on the internet through YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, and other social media platforms. Choosing to not stream on a channel and instead online has been shown to be very positive for the award show.

As a result, it has become one of the most earnest events on TV. No music plays anyone off during acceptance speeches, unlike other award ceremonies, and winners can bring anyone they want on stage–even a dog co-presented an award!

This year’s show was quite special in these following ways. Wayne Brady, after 9 years, finally won an award for his work on “Let’s Make a Deal” (losing several times to Steve Harvey’s Family Fued). “The Real” starring all women of color won best entertainment talk show hosts, beating “The View”, “Live with Kelly and Ryan”, and “The Talk”.

Earlier in the ceremony, hosts Lopez and Underwood expressed the show’s support for the #MeToo and #TimesUp movements. However, Lopez told the crowd, “Let me be clear: This is not a show about politics.”

Shortly after, attorney Gloria Allred arrived to introduce the category for best legal/courtroom program. “It has indeed been quite a year,” she said, thanking the Daytime Emmy’s for the invitation and “acknowledging the work that I’m doing.” Then she proceeded to hold up a sign and yell, “Bill Cosby! Guilty, guilty, guilty,” which was a  reference to Bill Cosby being convicted last week on three counts of sexual assault.

This year’s show was definitely one to remember!
