On Thursday May 3rd, Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano erupted. After a day of it being impended, and people being told to evacuate, it finally erupted. People saw this happen and stated that “splatter began erupting.” Kilauea is one of the world’s most active volcanoes. It’s in the Hawaii volcanoes National Park, it has closed off nearly 15,700 acres due to the volcano erupt.

They did not know exactly when the volcano would erupt, but they could see it happening anytime. They let everyone know they should start evacuating the area before it did. There was about 1,500 that needed to evacuate.

Roads started to crack and you could see the lava going into the cracks. The deafening sound of grinding rocks filled the air and “white, hot vapor and blue fume emanated” from the cracking, people said. The smoke was thick and plume, and the ash was rose. Once the lava started to spread all around, people started to evacuate quickly. Light and all kinds of sirens were going off alerting people to get out.

The eruption happened hours after a 5.0-magnitude earthquake stuck the Island on Thursday morning. Hawaii has been having multiple small earthquakes since Monday. Around 250 were reported.

There were no immediate reports of injuries but at least 100 people were in shelters Friday with many more evacuees believed to be staying with people outside of the area. The lava is flowing onto streets in the subdivision, which consists of about 770 structures. The volcano eruptions can release potentially dangerous sulfur dioxide that could harm people.
