Childish Gambino Wins Song of the Year

    Childish+Gambino+Wins+Song+of+the+Year

Donald Glover, formally known as Childish Gambino, won Song of the Year (for “This Is America”), Record of the Year, Best Music Video and Best Performance per the 2019 Grammys on Sunday. Surprisingly, “This Is America” is the first rap song to ever win Song of the Year.

Even more peculiar is that Glover accepted none of the four awards and did not show up at all to the Grammys. Perhaps we should have known he wouldn’t show because of what the song “This Is America” actually stands for.

As for the Grammys? The public’s distaste is growing with their racist tendencies, considering that in all 61 years of the Grammys, only 10 black artists have won album of the year. I guess you could just brush it off as coincidence, until you see what albums won over others. In 2013, Frank Ocean’s “Channel Orange” was beat out for Album of the Year by Mumford and Son’s “Babel”, in 2014, Kendrick Lamar’s “To Pimp a Butterfly” lost to Taylor Swift’s “1989”, and in 2017, Beyonce’s “Lemonade” lost to Adele’s “Cover Stories”, which I honestly have never heard a track off of.

Drake’s speech when accepting his award for Best Rap Song might have also been a hint of a growing distaste toward the Grammy’s. Below is an excerpt:

“You’ve already won if you have people who are singing your songs word for word, if you are a hero in your hometown. If there is people who have regular jobs who are coming out in the rain, in the snow, spending their hard-earned money to buy tickets to come to your shows, you don’t need this right here, I promise you, you already won.”

Drake was cut off abruptly. In addition to Childish Gambino, Drake also declined a performance slot at the 2019 Grammys. This cannot all be coincidence.

Nicholis Scott comments,”I think the Grammys are outdated and they don’t honor true art, they just reward whoever got the most streams or whoever is more popular.”
