    Cleveland Indians Home Opener

The Cleveland Indians’ had their long-awaited home opener on Monday, April 1st. The game was against the Chicago White Sox and it is the twenty-third time the Indians faced the White Sox in their home opener. Fans packed Progressive Field to support the Indians, causing tickets to sell out. This is the twenty-seventh consecutive home opener sellout.

The honor of first pitch was bestowed upon Wane Kirby. Kirby authored the ballpark’s first walk-off win when he singled home Eddie Murray in the 11th inning of a 1994 game against Seattle. He threw the first pitch to his former teammate, Sandy Alomar Jr, who is an Indians hall of famer. Alomar registered the first Indians base hit in the same game that Kirby is known for.

The Indians beat the White Sox 5-3, and many are contributing the win to starting pitcher Mike Clevinger. In the first seven innings, Clevinger struck out twelve players and walked three. He mainly pitched fastballs, with one pitch coming in at ninety-seven miles per hour. In the first inning, Leonys Martin stroked a base hit that turned into a double because of poor outfield work.

In the top of the eighth inning, the Cleveland Indians were losing to the White Sox with a 3-1 score. However, the Indians rallied to score four runs when they were up to bat in the bottom of the eighth inning. Two of the runs were a result of the Indians’ batters being walked with the bases loaded.

Lakewood High School senior, Tayt Armitage, didn’t manage to get tickets before they sold out but he followed the game. He thought, ” It was crazy how the Indians were losing and not only were able to tie, but also won thanks to being walked.”
