    Lakewood Girls’ Softball

Its spring in Lakewood, which means its time to bring out the bats, gloves, and balls. Time to get out on the field and play some softball. This year the LHS Girls Varsity Softball team have two new coaches and a brand new turf field right across from the high school. Although the girls haven’t got their first season win yet they are working hard, getting better and loving the game.

So far their record is 0-14, which isn’t the best but they are hoping to change that as they face the whole conference for a second time. The team does have some hard-hitting star players. Like three-year varsity starters Maizy Cunningham and Payton Rossen. Cunningham has so far hit 4 home runs and holds down shortstop for the Rangers. Rossen has hit one home run and has played incredible in the field as a pitcher, third baseman and center fielder.

Coach Nannette Lugo is the Head Coach for this program and this is her first year coaching for Lakewood. Coming here she was hoping for a junior varsity and a varsity team but with the lack of girls trying out, there is only a varsity team. 6 freshman, 10 juniors and 1 senior make up one varsity softball team. The fact that there are a lot of freshmen with no varsity experience puts some setbacks on the team. It also adds a lot of fresh and hungry athletes ready to play and give there all.

With zero wins on under their belts, they are looking forward to learning and growing together as a team, no matter how many wins or losses.
“Our season was fun and a great experience for us all!”-Junior Payton Rossen
