This past Friday, 10-time Grammy winner Taylor Swift released the lead single, “ME!”, off of her unreleased, highly anticipated album. The album name has yet to be announced. Although, Swift has hinted that the album title is hidden somewhere in the music video for “ME!”
When Swift was on YouTube chat on the “ME!” music video she advertised, “Regarding Easter eggs…there are a lot of them in this video. Some you’ll find out right away and some will take a minute to reveal their meaning.” Fans have taken this “Easter egg hunt” very seriously. The music video has been viewed so many times that it broke the Vevo record for the most viewed music video by a solo or female artist–receiving 65.2 million views in 24 hours. It currently has 108 million views.
The public has received some information from various interviews Swift had over the weekend. The lead single “ME!” is not the first song she wrote for the album. She is currently working on her tour schedule and it possibly starts in six months to a year.
The video starts off with a pink snake slithering into the frame and before it can attack it turns into a bunch of pink butterflies that fly off. The snake was a famous symbol in her “reputation” era. After being called a snake repeatedly from people on her Instagram posts she took the opportunity to turn it into a marketing franchise. With the snake turning into a butterfly the speculation is that this new era will be a metamorphosis into a new Taylor.
The song features band member Brendan Urie of Panic! at the Disco. In the video, he plays Swift’s significant other. They are caught arguing to each other in French–which is apparently another big clue. Senior, Renad Alumatiri, comments, “I love that Taylor brought Brendan Urie on the song with her. He’s great and she’s great. The song is very catchy.”
Swift described the song as about embracing your individuality. She explained in an interview with Robin Roberts, “With a pop song we have the ability to get a melody stuck in people’s heads and I just want it to be one that makes them feel better about themselves.”
