The Lakewood High School academic challenge has been cleaning up at tournaments with their A team placing top 5 in their first 2. Their top scorer being Evan Bell a senior at LHS. Lakewood A has already qualified for the national tournament in Atlanta. Lakewood often takes 2 teams to tournaments, the B team comprised of mostly freshman and sophomores. Freshman Sam Thomas top scorer on the B team in the first 2 tournaments. said “My back hurts from carrying the team like this.” So far both teams have gone to 4 tournaments. The B team has not placed as well as the A team but Josh Mika a sophomore in his second year of acedemic challenge says this year has a much better B team and they win more games at tournaments.

The A team is getting ready to tape for the academic challenge show. They will appear on television against other schools from Northeast Ohio, for a chance to win money to help fund the program. Many schools that the team compete against are much larger than their own. Lakewoods team is fairly small often only sending four players for each team. Students on the team are encouraged to recruit friends for fellow students that might be interested, to just attend a practice and see if it’s right for them. Any students interested in joing should go to a practice which typically take place fridays after school in Mr. Sedlak’s room. All new members will be encouraged to buzz in on any questions they might know.

Their are multiple types of tournaments the team attends. Three of the teams tournaments so far have been NAQT rules which means there are 20 questions for anyone to get about anything, but if someone on your team gets it right you get 3 bonus questions just for your team. At these tournaments personal statsistics are tracked and posted online shortly after the end of the tournament. At these tournaments the person with most points scored by any one player over their highschool careers so far is Evan Bell. The other type of tournaments the team often attends are broken up into different rounds with unique rules and categories. Placement at NAQT tournaments are how Lakewood qualifies for the national tournament, which they often attend and will going to this year.
