At the Rocky River Recreational Center from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m, there will be a benefit for the Rocky River and Lakewood firefighters.

$15,000 in funding is the goal for a infrared cycle sauna decontamination for the River Fire Department and the goal for Lakewood is to get a commercial grade Stairmaster.

lakewoodobserver.com states, “The initiative’s goal is to help firefighters and first-responders remove toxins from their bodies after fighting fires. After completing a five-year study of nearly 30,000 firefighters, researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH)… firefighters in the study had a greater number of cancer diagnoses and cancer-related deaths.”

The sauna’s purpose is to remove the toxins from the body. This promotes sweating which is why it is effective.

The Lakewood Committee on Public Safety and the state fire marshal said that a Stairmaster is a necessity because it is an important piece of fitness and training.

Lakewood is home to a lot of high rise homes; this means that firefighters are having to climb quite a distance. In order to do this they have to be strong, which is why fitness and training is a key component to their success.
