In light of the recent tragedy in Newtown, CT, two local churches have come together to provide a place for a much needed community discussion on the tragic school shooting.
The meeting will consist of an opening with a panel of four politically relevant people around Ohio. The first being Nickie J. Antonio, a State Representative, who will touch on state funding and gun laws in Ohio.
The next speaker, William B. Denihan the Chief Executive Officer of the Alcohol, Drug Addiction and Mental Health Services of Cuyahoga County, will speak on the topic of the mental health aspect of the shooting.
Mr. Denihan will be followed by Lakewood’s Law Director, Kevin M. Butler who will discuss local gun laws.
Lastly Ken E. Trump, who is the president of National School Safety and Security Services and has been nationally televised to speak on the topic, will wrap things up and talk about school safety and ways to improve it in our community.
This will be followed by an hour long Q&A session.
This community discussion is hoped to be the first in a series of pressing topics affecting the residents of Lakewood, including women’s issues, domestic violence and a topic that hits close to home for Lakewood High students — bullying. The chair of Cove/LCC Newtown Discussion Committee, Donna M. Holland hopes that people “leave this discussion with more knowledge and awareness then they came with.”
She and her husband have made it their goal to make their organization more relevant in the community and provide a safe place for residents can come together to discuss and start making a difference in our city. The next discussion in this series will be on Bullying featuring a State Senator to lead the discussion on this issue and is hoped to follow sometime in the next couple months.
The discussion will take place on March 3rd from 2pm-4pm at Cove Church located at 12501 Lake Avenue (on the corners of Lake, Cove and Clifton) in Lakewood.
