Thousand Oaks, California is considered one of the safest place in the country. On November 7th a gunman opened fire in Borderline Bar & Grille and killed 12 people. The gunman was later identified as 28-year-old former Marine Ian David Long. He was on duty from August 2008 to March 2013. It was reported that he went to shooting ranges often. Mr. Long has had previous run-ins with the law. In April, officers responded to a disturbance at his house where he was irate and acting irrational.

Although one of his close friends described him as a stable man, Long’s mother lived in fear of what her son might do. In 2011 he went through a divorce with his wife but he didn’t have children or owned a property. Later after he opened fire, he then killed himself inside the bar. Senior Adam Hascher said, “People’s lives shouldn’t be at risk while going to a bar, that’s unacceptable”.

In a news conference Thursday afternoon, law enforcement officials said the investigation was ongoing and that there were no indications the shooter was acting with others.

California governor-elect Gavin Newsom responded to last night’s mass shooting at an event in San Francisco Thursday afternoon. He said,”This is America…This doesn’t happen anywhere else on the planet. We can’t let folks forget that. We can’t allow this to be normalized”. Many people around the country want change.

President Donald Trump took to twitter and said, “Great bravery shown by police. God bless all of the victims and families of the victims”.
