This past Friday, April 13th, Lakewood High School held the annual, Kiwanis sponsored Ranger Relays track meet. This meet consists of some teams from within our Southwest Conference and some from different areas.

There were a total of nine track teams running in the meet. The teams included Berea-Midpark, Cleveland Central Catholic, North Royalton, Parma, Rocky River, Saint Joseph Academy, Valley Forge, Westlake, and Lakewood.

The Lakewood Girls Track team fought hard, taking 5th place. The boys’ team, however, showed an outstanding performance taking 1st place.

The Lakewood boys track team scored 80 points, following close behind was Berea-Midpark with 78 points. The boys’ win will hopefully give them a new motivation to work even harder.

Highlights from the meet include Senior Joe Burtzlaff taking 2nd place in the 3200m with an incredible time of 10:26.82, a new personal record.

Junior Tyler Hannah took first place in both the 110m hurdles with a time of 14.60, as well as high jump, clearing a height of 6-2.5, both personal records. His 110m hurdles time also set a new meet record.

Junior Alvin Musai took second place in discus, with a throw of 104-0, a season record. The 800 meter sprint medley relay team took 1st place with a time of 1:38.22.

Only two teams from Ranger Relays, Rocky River and Westlake, will attend the same conference as Lakewood. This gives the boys’ team a sense of what to expect at the SouthWest Conference meet.

While Lakewood beat Rocky River by six points and Westlake by 37, the Conference and other post season meets could still bring surprises, making it crucial for the team to stay focused.
