Rand Paul Changes Vote, Putting Mike Pompeo on Track For Confirmation

Senator Rand Paul announced early on Monday, April 23rd, that he will support the nomination of Mike Pompeo for secretary of State, a last-minute reversal that will avoid a historic rebuke of Presidents Trump pick for the country’s top diplomat.

Paul’s decision change will now allow Pompeo to have the approval of the majority of senators in the Foreign Relations Committee. Paul tweeted about the topic, “Having received assurances from President Trump and Director Pompeo that he agrees with the President on these important issues, I have decided to support his nomination to be our next Secretary of State.” If Paul would have kept his original opposition to the nomination, it would have been the first secretary of state nominee not to win a favorable recommendation from the committee, according to the Senate Historical Office.

But this doesn’t mean a nomination for Pompeo, who still has many democrats opposing him, and needs to pass in the senate to be approved. Many democrats criticize Pompeo for his strict foreign policy and his loyalty to Trump. Many republicans make this out as hate for the president himself instead of Pompeo, who has quiet the notable resumé, being a former congressman who graduated first in his class from the US military academy and received a degree from Harvard law. Trump tweeted about the issue, saying, “Hard to believe Obstructionists May vote against Mike Pompeo for Secretary of State. The Dems will not approve hundreds of good people, including the Ambassador to Germany. They are maxing out the time on approval process for all, never happened before. Need more Republicans!”

While Rand Paul’s last-minute change of mind is good news for Mike Pompeo, there is still a wall of democrats blocking him from becoming the next Secretary of State.
