Why Does This Generation Get so Offended?

Why Does This Generation Get so Offended?

Today it’s easy to look around and see that there’s been lots of social change in the last few decades. Some of these changes particularly, in my opinion, weren’t for the better at all. An example of this is how thin-skinned and soft this generation is. By this generation, I mean both Millennials and Gen Z.

Sometimes referred to as the “Snowflake Generation,” young adults and teenagers alike fall into this category. The exact definition of the Snowflake Generation, according to Wikipedia, “a term used to characterize the young adults of the 2010s as being more prone to taking offense than previous generations, or as being too emotionally vulnerable to cope with views that challenge their own.”

The basic definition is someone who gets easily offended if somebody has an opinion that goes against views of their own.

So the question is, why do young adults feel the need to act this way? Some people say it’s because of entitlement or narcissism. Others say that it’s because of boredom and only getting into pointless arguments will satisfy that boredom. Either way, it’s annoying and people need to stop getting offended for other people, which is a big part of this issue, too.

One of the things that I’ve noticed is how people tend to get offended and angry for others, which is nothing short of annoying. It’s insanely hard for comedians these days to be able to have a performance without having to deal with some sort of stupid backlash because they joked about something they’ve gone through, yet it would be considered offensive to some even if the one getting offended has never had a run in with whatever’s being joked about. It’s ridiculous.

Agreeing with me, Lakewood High Junior Isaac Ferrato said, “there are some times where it’s okay to get offended, but overall this generation needs to man up and get over it. Not everything revolves around you.”
