    Swimming Into the Season

    Swimming Into the Season

It is the beginning of the winter sports season at the high school; indoor track, basketball, wrestling, and of course swimming.  The start of the swim season began on November 30th.

Throughout the season, the Lakewood swim team will compete against Westlake, Berea-Midpark, Avon, Olmsted Falls, North Ridgeville, Amherst, and Bay Village. Both the boys and girls have already swam against Westlake, Berea-Midpark, and in a Viking Sectional; the boys are currently 0-3 and the girls are 1-2.

Ella Villafane, a sophomore on the team, stated that she is, “Looking forward to having more meets and trying our best to win.”

Although swimming is the main focus, the team has had other things intervene that is drawing their attention: the recent death of a former coach for most of the swimmers and team bonding.

Jim Stacy, a former swim coach for the LRST, passed away on a December 8th, 2018. He had taught swim for over 50 years in Northeast Ohio. Maddy McFarlin, a junior who had him as a coach, stated, “For the time I had him, which wasn’t as long as others did, he still impacted my swimming career by pushing me and proving to me that I could do more than I thought. He was always are hard on us, but we knew that he cared tremendously.”

Aside from practices with each other, the team has a form of social communication and they always get together on their own time. Villafane also said, “We all bond super well and I cannot wait for the rest of the season.”

Catch the swim team at the next home match on December 18th against Olmsted Falls.
