According to Wikipedia, “Du-rags were originally the headgear of poor laborers and slaves in the 19th century. In the 1930s, during the Harlem Renaissance and Great Depression, the du-rag evolved into a hairstyle preserver. After the Black Power Movement in the late 1960s, the du-rag became a fashion statement among African-Americans, worn by rappers, athletes and men of all ages. In the 2000s, wearing du-rags in public lost popularity in certain areas but maintained its popularity in others. However, because of rappers, such as A$AP Ferg, and the return of waves as a hairstyle, they have now regained their status as a fashion among the African-American community.”

Du-rags are used in a lot of African-American and Hispanic cultures to tame hair and to obtain a wave-like hair pattern. These patterns could be big waves, small waves, even waves, uneven waves, and many more.

Du-rags are worn after your hair is brushed, and a product of your choice is put into your hair.

Devon Brown, a senior at Lakewood High School says, ” I got serious about my waves around last year, I started putting natural product in my hair, brushing it, then putting a tightly ties du-rag on. Everyone loves my hair. I’m wavy. ”
