What's the Best Way to Spend Valentine's Day Alone?

Valentine’s Day is here and you’re spending it alone, probably watching Netflix and eating some of your favorite ice cream. What are some things that can help you get over the Valentine’s Day loneliness?

First of all, don’t be so down on yourself. So what if your significant other, or lack there of, decided to leave you days or weeks before the holiday of love? You need to keep in mind that you’re not completely alone. A study analysis led by Christopher Masi at the University of Chicago showed that negative thoughts are connected to loneliness, so a good way to keep those negative thoughts at bay is to keep your head up. Surround yourself with positivity.

Another thing you can very easily do is treat yourself to this holiday. Nobody will care that you bought yourself some flowers or a box of chocolates or whatever. Treat yourself by making the day a stress free, relaxing day by watching your favorite movies and/or shows, eat your favorite snacks, and hang out with other lonely friends and be alone together.

If you want to do a little bit of good as well, consider donating to the Wildlife Images Rehabilitation and Education Center in Grants Pass, Oregon, as they’re also having fun celebrating Valentine’s Day. For a $20 donation, you can have a salmon named after one of your exes, which will be fed to one of their brown bears, Kodi and Yak. You’ll receive a certificate with the fish, name, and photos of the bears enjoying your donation. It’s a good feeling to donate, but it’s even better to get some sort of ex revenge.

Above all, the simplest way to combat the Valentine’s Day loneliness is to just completely ignore the holiday. It doesn’t say anywhere that you have to celebrate, so there’s no real reason to get yourself all bent out of shape because of it.

“I think that Valentine’s Day is a kind of stupid holiday to begin with,” said Hana Johnson, “I think it encourages teens to get too stressed out over love that more than likely won’t last.”
