On Friday, March 8th, eleven Lakewood High school students, staff, and community members volunteered to shave their heads in order to raise donations for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation.

The St.Baldrick’s Foundation’s purpose is to raise money for childhood cancer research. The foundation states, “Two-thirds of children treated for childhood cancer will suffer long-term effects from treatment including loss of hearing and sight, heart disease, secondary cancers, learning disabilities, infertility, and more.” They also reveal that “Worldwide, 300,000 children are diagnosed with cancer each year. And in the U.S., more children die of childhood cancer than any other disease—more than AIDS, asthma, cystic fibrosis, congenital anomalies, and diabetes combined.”

Among those that volunteered to shave their heads at Lakewood Highschool, they raised in total nearly $8,000. Alvin Musai – $402, Gray Cooper – $654, Jimmy Trudel – $2130, Joey Toole – $214, Margaret McLaughlin – $255, Miles Watts – $2053, Peter Petto – $342, Robert McGorray – $75, Ryan Chanter – $301, Simon Sanders – $1149, and Tovi Vega – $111.

When some Lakewood High School students were asked about the event they responded, “It makes me happy to see people do things like this, especially girls because hair means a lot to most of us. For someone to shave their head means a lot but it means, even more, when they raise hundreds or even thousands of dollars. I really am pleased to watch this happen every year for a great cause” – Emma Walker, Wilson Reynolds also pitched in a few words about the topic “not everyone needs to shave their head to help which is cool, just donating to someone who does shave their head means a lot too.”

Overall, Lakewood hosted another successful St.Baldrick’s event and the community is proud of everyone who participated.
