Erdogan loses control of Turkish capital in local elections setback

Turkey’s President Recap, Tayyip Erdogan, is facing a major setback after his party lost control of the capital, Ankara, in a hard-fought local elections battle according to CNN. Preliminary results also showed the opposition narrowly ahead of the President’s Justice and Development Party (AKP) in Istanbul, the country’s largest city.

The results, if confirmed, will be a blow to Erdogan, who has dominated Turkish politics since becoming Prime Minister in 2003. The opposition party or (CHP) People’s republic party won more than 50% of votes while AKP was close at about 47% according to the state news agency.

It is the first time in 25 years that the Islamist party has lost its grip on the capital, which is a long time for a country like this. Then on Monday, the outcomes were almost to close to call according to Anadolu, CHP received 48.79% of votes, barely ahead of the AKP with 48.51%.

Now, here is what is going on now apparently according to CNN Ekrem Imamoglu from the CHP had received 25,000 more votes according to preliminary results, but Binali Yildirim said that over 300,000 votes were “invalid.” Student Evan Brown has an opinion and he says, “This situation must be resolved for there to be peace in the country.”

In a speech on Sunday evening, Erdogan said lessons would be learned.
“People who come up with false promises, go ahead. We will see how they will rule, we will continue on our path God willing — by taking lessons from our mistakes in election,” he said. This was the man who was in power and his party was too, for 25 years.
This most likely will not be the last we see of this “invalid votes” from Turkey it will probably continue until the next election until something changes.
