    We Need a Later Start

    We Need a Later Start

Lakewood High School needs a change.  The school needs a later start to the day.  Many students are sleep deprived, tired and just mentally not function in the morning of the school day or become extremely tired by the end of the day.

Obviously the administrative staff does not care about things like this since they took 15 minutes out of our day to make a homeroom where in the end most kids play on their phones.  Even a 15 minute later start could make a huge difference. When there are only 24 hours in a day and students are at school for nearly a third of their day the administration should manage the day better.

The change we need is getting rid of homeroom.  This is arguably the most pointless ¨class¨ we all have which could make the biggest difference.  Students would be able to sleep in for a bit longer in the morning. Also if we started school even 15 minutes later on top of that, that gives students an extra 30 minutes in the morning to either sleep in or just take time to relax before the stressful day in school.

Teens need an average of 8-10 hours of sleep but with most students having many things do to outside of school including sports, jobs, musical activities this becomes very hard to accomplish. Senior Long Do says “The little extra time in the morning can really make a difference especially if that means more sleep.”

We need a change and the principals need to listen to us because this is one change that they can make to actually help the students since homeroom obviously did not turn out how they thought it would. There are also no cons to making these changes. A simple decision can be made to solve one big problem.
