Astrology is not only about zodiacs; a lot of astrology is based on constellations. A constellation is a group of stars that make a shape in the sky. Many of them come from Greek mythology and some of the stars are made out to look like characters, animals, and objects.

One famous constellation would be the Big Dipper. The Big Dipper resembles a pot with a handle. The Big Dipper is actually very useful. It can be used for navigation in the northern hemisphere.

Another major star constellation is the Ursa Major. The Ursa Major could also be known as the Big Bear because the stars make out a bear. The Latin meaning is the “greater-she-bear”. The Ursa major is very important. The constellation of the Ursa major makes a full circle around the north star every 24 hours; for that reason, it can never be seen below the horizon. Because of that, the Ursa Major has been used as a star clock throughout history.

Orion is another constellation that is visible to the whole world. Orion is one of the most recognizable constellations in the night sky. The constellation is named after the Greek hunter Orion. There are three big stars in a horizontal line in the middle of the figure that represents Orion’s belt. The line of stars extending down from the belt represents the sword that hangs down from his belt.

Take a look at the sky tonight to see if you can spot these constellations!
