April is National Distracted Driving Awareness month, which gives us time to reflect on the responsibilities we have while on the road. Distracted driving is responsible for more than nine deaths and 1,000 injuries per day according to the CDC.

Students at Lakewood Highschool in the West Shore Career-Tech Theatre Arts program entered a short film contest to spread awareness of distracted driving. Three students at Lakewood Highschool won first and second place. Senior Weylin Dalton was the grand prize winner and Seniors Ilana Darr and Amy Pilgrim won second place. Their PSAs will be shown prior to movies in Regal Cinemas at the Great Northern and Crocker Park locations.

The Lakewood Times spoke to one of the winners for this short film contest. Here’s what Ilana Darr had to say: “This project was for the University Hospitals Rainbow Injury Prevention Center and we were so excited to have the opportunity to even be chosen! It was so unexpected, I remember Amy and I were just having fun when we made it so it was really cool to see something we did for fun be recognized!”

Congratulations to the winners!
