What’s a sandwich? A sandwich is any food between 2 pieces of bread such as vegetables, cheese, or good old peanut butter and jelly. The origin of the sandwich and its name goes all the way back to 1762. As the story goes, John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich, is the one who created this meal. One day he was playing cards and refused to leave the table in order to eat, so he asked for a serving of roast beef to be placed in between 2 pieces of bread so he could eat while still playing cards.

Now 260 years later sandwiches are known as a household food. In Lakewood there are several sandwich places to check out. So here is a list of some of them:

Subway was founded by a 17- year-old named Fred DeLuca and financed by Peter Buck in 1965 under the name Pete’s Super Submarines in Bridgeport, Connecticut. Some of the many sandwiches you can get are meatball, chicken teriyaki ,and the grand salami. Some of the other stuff you can get at Subway, that are not sandwiches, include salads, the avocado spike bowl, chips, and cookies.

Mr.Hero was founded in 1965 on Cleveland’s westside. 55 years later Mr. Hero’s Roman Burger has been and still is considered to be one of the best sandwiches ever made. A list of other sandwiches or/ burgers you can get at Mr.Hero are the cheeseburger, hot buttered cheesesteak, Sicilian parmesan, zesty bacon & swiss, chicken Philly and chicken, bacon and ranch.

Last but not least, we have Jimmy John’s which was founded in 1983 by Jimmy John Liautaud. After Liautaud graduated from high school his dad gave him the opportunity to either join the military or start a business. Some of the types of sandwiches you can order are roast beef, ham & provolone, turkey & bacon, and turkey, ham, & provolone.

There are a variety of sandwich places in Lakewood, and the Earl of Sandwich would probably be impressed.
