The Lakewood Times

Alejandro Nieves Bucey, Clubs and Organizations Reporter

The Lakewood Times is an English elective class students can take about journalism. Unlike most of the other English electives, which are usually only half a semester long, this class is an all year class so once you are done with all three English classes you will be all set with your English credits. Like the Cinema class (Yearbook), this was originally a class taught by Mr Ebner until he retired in the 2020-2021 school year when Ms. Basinski took his place as a half a year sub then a full time teacher in the 2021-2022 school year. But unlike how the Cinema became just a club when Ms Basinski took position, the Times has remained just as a class.

In this class, students will start off with grammar boot camp at the start of the year to use proper journalism grammar when it comes time to write their articles. Speaking of articles.. What you are going to end up doing most of this class is writing weekly articles. With the start of each quarter students will have a vertical sign-up to pick one of six categories being clubs and organizations: Lakewood news, student news, Lakewood sports, performing arts, and food & restaurants. They will use their category until the end of the quarter and are expected to do a different category during the next quarter and so on. Once a student has selected their category they will then pick their topic for that category and should usually have it done by the Thursday of that week and have it proofread and posted to the Lakewood Times website the Friday of that week. Zines were a once a month project for the Times class last year but Ms Basinski changed it into the midterm and final exam for the class.
