Lakewood Girl’s Basketball Lock-In

The Lakewood High School Girls’ basketball team is a very close-knit group of athletes. The core value of the team is “lift as you rise” and they continuously exercise this day after day. Each team cheers on the other and every girl pushes another to get better. But, the season is very long and juggling their academics, basketball, and social life can be difficult. However, when the team feels more like a family and each player genuinely wants to come into the gym every day to push themselves and their teammates, the season doesn’t feel so long. The coaches are really pushing this message of one family this year. On Saturday, Nov. 5, the girls had their first team bonding event of the year.

Unfortunately, the many quarantines and breaks, the testing, the masks, and the social distancing that came with the pandemic made last year very difficult for the team to gather together outside of practice and games. Thankfully, this year they were able to carry out the annual lock-in. At this event, the girls had a sleepover at Harding Middle School with the entire high school program. Throughout the night, the girls sang karaoke, the different grades battled against each other in a dance competition, and they played pickleball, dodgeball, and even more basketball. They also had a potluck-type dinner with catering from Italian Creations as well as appetizers, desserts, snacks, and drinks brought in by the players.

This event was just one step toward bringing together all of the girls on the team. Whether they are new freshmen or returning seniors; they are one family. The coaches hope to plan more team bonding events in the future for the girls as they enter into the long cold months of the winter.
