On Nov. 20, the Dance Group held a meeting to decide which dances members would participate in for the season. Due to ongoing construction in the dance studio this year, the group has relocated to the third floor, utilizing the open hallway space as their new practice area. Despite the change, the dancers have embraced the new setting and are making the best of the situation.
The meeting began with snacks provided by mentors Patty Hays and Leslie Kolasinski. Hays has been mentoring the Dance Group for 14 years, while Kolasinski, who has been involved for four years, shares a unique connection with the group. As a former member herself, Kolasinski was once mentored by Hays during her high school years.
“When I was in high school, I was in the group,” Kolasinski said. “So we got in contact, and I was like she’s still doing it—that’s so fun, I want to do it too.”
After enjoying their snacks, members watched choreography performed by their peers to decide which dances they wanted to join this season. In making their choices, members had to consider their schedules and availability, as Dance Group operates on a flexible practice model. Members only attend practices for the specific dances they are participating in, allowing them to balance their other commitments.
Dance Group welcomes dancers of all skill levels, from beginners to seasoned performers. They work hard to foster an inclusive and supportive environment. Choreographies are adaptable to ensure that everyone feels comfortable participating.
“Don’t be afraid to join dances, it’s open to everyone,” second-year member Holly Rogalski said. Rogalski got involved last year when her friend asked if she wanted to join. “I like dancing, I’ve been dancing awhile, and I really ended up loving it.”
A highlight of Dance Group is that it is student-oriented and primarily student-run. Student directors Josie Kavc and Lay Phalt Htoo take on key leadership roles, organizing practices and choreographing their own routines. Kavc and Phalt Htoo are four-year members and know what it takes to help lead the Dance Group.
“My sister was in Dance Group when she was in high school, so when I was a freshman, it was a no-brainer to do it too,” Kavc said. “I’ve danced my whole life, and I enjoy dancing with all my friends after school.”
This year’s Dance Group has 24 members, and they have created a fun atmosphere for all the dancers to get along well with each other. Junior Averi Johnson joined Dance Group this year because she was looking for an extracurricular and enjoys dancing.
“It’s really fun when we are all together in this big space, just dancing together,” Johnson said.
Dance Group showcases a wide range of styles, including hip-hop and contemporary, providing members with opportunities to express themselves and highlight their skills. The variety ensures that every dancer has a chance to shine during performances.
Throughout the dance season, the members will have many opportunities to get to know each other and collaborate to create a fantastic end-of-season show. They collaborate to plan out their dances, costumes, lighting, and more for each specific dance.
“I think it’s really fun to see your choreography come to life,” Kavc said.
This year’s season is shorter than usual, so the dancers will work extra hard to assemble their end-of-year show. The group will focus on maximizing every practice slot to ensure the show’s success.
The performances will take place on Feb. 7 and 8, showcasing four months of dedication and teamwork. The show is a presentation of all the hard work, creativity, and talent they have put in and a celebration of what they have been working on.
“I’m excited to watch everyone’s different styles and personalities shine through,” Johnson said.
