What better way to embrace the holiday spirit than by giving to those in need? This year, Cove Community Center’s Giving Tree returns to help families in need by allowing citizens to donate gifts to those facing unfortunate circumstances this holiday season.
Cove’s initiative offers a straightforward way to make a difference, igniting the spirit of giving while encouraging reflection on how we can contribute to those less fortunate. Karen Nahra, clinical manager of the Lakewood Area Collaborative, shared her views on the Giving Tree.
“The Giving Tree provides the community and students an opportunity to “give back” in a meaningful, tangible way. It also allows the community and students to see the needs in our community and feel fulfillment from giving. It teaches empathy, gratitude, and kindness,” Nahra said, emphasizing the valuable learning experience provided by Cove’s donation initiative.
Instructions posted by the tree offer clear guidance on how to donate and spread holiday cheer in Lakewood. Participants can select a tag from the tree, shop for unwrapped gifts—such as clothing, gift cards, and toys—and return them by Monday, December 16.
Lakewood High School senior Gianna Caroniti expressed her thoughts on the tree’s instructions. “It is very obvious what the tree is for!” Caroniti said, noting that nearby signs clearly outline how to participate in the gift-giving effort.
This initiative sparks reflection and encourages giving back to those in need. Charity and donations can teach valuable lessons, as agreed by Guidance Counselor Abigaile Drost.
“I think that it teaches students to understand that others may be less fortunate than them or may need more help and support. It also fosters the student’s ability to be involved with the community and to give back,” Drost said.
The heartwarming mission fosters a sense of community and responsibility, allowing residents to contribute their time and support to those who are less fortunate. This is the second year for the Giving Tree at Cove Community Center, which operates under the City of Lakewood’s Department of Human Services
“Cove Community Center has been in existence for just over 2 years and this is the second year for the Giving Tree — Cove Community Center is the home of the City of Lakewood’s Department of Human Services. Within the Department of Human Services are the Division of Aging, the Division of Youth, Help to Others (H20), and the Division of Early Childhood which all have been in existence for decades,” Nahra noted.
The Cove Community Center has become a staple for community involvement and sustainability, hosting numerous meetings and events that benefit Lakewood neighborhoods.
“Cove Community Center is an amazing resource to those who may need help,” Drost added, emphasizing her commitment to setting students up for success and teaching them valuable lessons both in and out of the classroom.
The holiday season can often be stressful, with last-minute gift shopping overshadowing the true spirit of the holidays; despite the busyness, the selflessness of gift-giving remains admired. “It is so important to make others feel loved and the giving spirit during this time of year, people need it now more than ever and it makes everyone feel good,” Caroniti said, affirming her belief that the Christmas spirit is rooted in kindness.
While acts of empathy carry special meaning during the festive season, they can and should be expressed year-round. Donations always benefit those in need, and a single good deed can create cherished memories.
“[Individuals] could continue to volunteer and donate to initiatives that support those in need throughout the year; it doesn’t have to be just during the holiday season,” Drost suggested, advocating that volunteer work benefits everyone involved.
Reviews of The Giving Tree remain positive, with its impact resonating throughout the year. “We have received much gratitude from those who have benefited from the Giving Tree,” Nahra said, noting ongoing feedback and appreciation from families and seniors, with the spirit of generosity continuing.
Giving Tree provides a simple yet meaningful way to support the community while expressing empathy and care. “Cove Community Center is grateful to everyone who has contributed to the Giving Tree over the last two years. We couldn’t do this without you. If you know of a family or senior citizen that could benefit from the Giving Tree, please reach out to Cove Community Center: 216-529-6870,” Nahra concluded.
