Introduction
Greetings and salutations my fellow comic book connoisseurs! In Ultimate Spider-Man #11, released on November 20, 2024, the story masterfully combines action, emotional depth, and character growth, showcasing the talents of writer Jonathan Hickman and artist David Messina.
Plot Overview
The issue starts with Peter Parker—an adult balancing his roles as a husband and father- and the masked vigilante Spider-Man—staking out a location in anticipation of meeting Harry Osborn. Harry Osborn operates as the Green Goblin in this universe (earth 6160). However, Harry Osborne is not a villain in this run, instead being a hero. Nevertheless, Harry’s absence forces Peter to remain vigilant, leading him to intercept a bank robbery in progress. Although Peter subdues the robbers very quickly, the situation escalates with the arrival of Mr. Negative. Mr. Negative is capable of manipulating the minds of others, as well as other abilities yet to be shown. He exerts control over the bank’s patrons, forcing them to attack Spider-Man, complicating the hero’s efforts to maintain public safety without harming civilians.
After this intense encounter, Peter returns home to a conversation with his wife, Mary Jane Watson. They talk about the dangers he faces and how his double life affects their family. This moment adds emotional weight and possibly serves as an anchor or a bay for the true beginning of Peter’s journey in this comic run. The interaction between Peter and Mary Jane Watson also reinforces the personal cost of being Spider-Man, a theme present in all comic runs.
Meanwhile, Felicia Hardy steps in as the new Black Cat, hinting at a shake-up in the criminal underworld. Her brief but impactful appearance suggests future clashes and alliances, adding intrigue to the story.
The issue closes with Peter visiting Memorial Park to honor Aunt May’s memory with Uncle Ben. In this comic’s continuity, it was Aunt May who died as opposed to Uncle Ben. It is revealed that Uncle Ben already knew that Peter was operating as Spider-Man at the time, and their touching conversation brings a sense of grounding, reminding readers of the personal losses that shape Peter’s journey.
Character Development
This issue dives deep into Peter’s internal struggles, balancing his role as Spider-Man with his responsibilities to his family. His dialogue with Mary Jane lays bare the strain on their marriage, painting a complex picture of their love and the sacrifices they make.
Felicia Hardy’s entrance as the new Black Cat introduces a potential new adversary or ally, depending on how her ambitions unfold. Her desire to take over Kingpin’s empire hints at a more significant role in the series, promising fresh challenges for Peter.
Uncle Ben’s presence serves as a moral anchor, reminding Peter and readers of the values guiding his life. Their discussion about Aunt May brings the story full circle, emphasizing family and the personal stakes of heroism.
Artistic Aspects
David Messina’s artwork stands out in this issue, especially in the high-energy action scenes and the emotionally charged character moments. The bank robbery sequence is alive with motion, capturing Spider-Man’s agility and the chaos of the fight. Messina’s detailed facial expressions in quieter moments enhance the emotional impact, while the color work shifts smoothly between the vibrant action and the more subdued tones of personal reflection. This is emphasized in a conversation between Peter and Uncle Ben, where they stand beside each other as they speak. At the end of the issue, with Peter walking off, it’s almost like Peter is a shadow, a silhouette. Meanwhile, Uncle Ben, looking back at Peter as he leaves, is fully visible. If one chooses to read/purchase the comic themselves, the art will be a high point. David Messina is a maestro, a conductor in the symphony of shading, light and dark, dim and bright. This issue’s art is impeccable and will leave the reader returning to the volume simply to admire it.
Thematic Elements
Responsibility remains a central theme, as in every Spider-Man comic run. As Peter navigates the delicate balance between his duties as a hero and his personal life, the challenges he faces, from new villains like Mr. Negative to the re-emergence of Black Cat, push him to adapt constantly.
Legacy also plays a significant role, primarily through the remembrance of Aunt May. Her influence is a guiding force for Peter, reminding him of the lessons she taught. This theme of legacy extends to Felicia Hardy, whose ambition to take Kingpin’s place hints at a redefinition of roles within the established order.
In Comparison To Other Comic Runs
Unlike other comic runs about (mostly) the same characters, Ultimate Spider-Man follows a Peter Parker and company who are already adults, and his Uncle Ben is alive. More thought and detail are given to Peter’s own individual role in his life, showcasing his lives as husband, father, and hero, not just a double but a triple life. Although Peter’s traditional rogue’s gallery is shown and featured, author Jonathan Hickman also introduces characters from his divergent rogues gallery, leading to a more expanded world. The emotional core, specifically the relationship between Peter and Mary Jane, recalls the mature themes explored in J. Michael Straczynski’s run on The Amazing Spider-Man. However, Hickman elevates this with a greater emphasis on the impact of superhero life on family dynamics, pushing the boundaries of the traditional superhero narrative into more nuanced territory.
