Intercepted Signal

How would you feel if your group chat leaked? Perhaps some friendship drama is exposed, or worse, your plans to bomb Yemen are revealed—either way, it’s a big deal. On March 24, Jeffrey Goldberg, editor-in-chief of The Atlantic, published an article detailing how members of the Trump administration had inadvertently added him to their private group chat. Goldberg published a variety of messages from within the group chat, dated from March 13 to March 15, which covered multiple topics, including talks about trade issues and the aforementioned plans to bomb Yemen, all the way down to the minute. Skeptical at first, Goldberg was soon convinced of the group chat’s validity once the same bombs that had been discussed approximately two hours before began to fall. He then proceeded to remove himself from the group chat. Following his publication, the revelations raised concerns about why government officials were using the messaging platform “Signal” to discuss such sensitive matters.
