Chicken Jockeys and Popcorn Carnage

With the April 14th release of the Minecraft movie, children and many adults are reveling in the enjoyment of the film starring Jack Black, Jason Momoa, Emma Myers, Jennifer Coolidge, and even a couple of Minecraft YouTuber cameos. The film boasts many trending lines made memorable by Black’s delivery, including “I am Steve,” “chicken jockey,” “flint and steel.” Due to the oversaturation of these phrases on the internet before the film’s release, movie-goers have taken to overdramatic displays of their enjoyment, often involving loud shouts and popcorn thowing. Some have even gone as far as bringing live chickens into the theatre during screenings. These antics have even caught the attention of Jack Black and the film’s director, Jared Hess, both of whom have praised fans for their enthusiasm. Hess remarked that he’s “…just glad people are making memories with their friends and families,” particularly regarding the playful formation of human chicken jockeys and spirited shouting. While showing enjoyment for a film is fine on its own, such disruptive behaviors can be extremely disruptive for families watching quietly and for theater staff tasked with the cleanup. So, go enjoy the movie and support those who worked on it. Cheer and clap, but remember to keep in mind those around you and those responsible after you leave.
