On Friday, Sept. 8, the Lakewood High School football team took on Harvey at home. In an unexpected win, Lakewood beat Harvey 28-20. Leading by 28-7 at halftime, Lakewood held on to their lead throughout the second half to secure their win. Freshman quarterback Otto Wilhelmy threw for 138 passing yards and two touchdowns, while senior Nick Hart had 30 receiving yards and one touchdown. The From the Sidelines inaugural “Who Put in the Hustle” award goes to senior KaVontah Swain for getting the most rushing yards and scoring a touchdown.
On Saturday, Sept. 6, the boys and girls cross country teams took the trip to Attica, Ohio, for the Seneca East “Stars, Stripes and Lights Invitational.” The boys had an impressive outing as the varsity took 3rd place overall in a tough lineup of 18 teams. Junior Porter Gilliland got first overall in the race, winning by 15 seconds and setting a new season best. The JV boys also put in some great work, getting 1st overall by over 30 points. The girls’ varsity team took eighth of 12 teams, while the JV team finished third. The From The Sidelines’ “Who Put the Hustle in” award for Saturday goes to freshman Will Schuldt, who became the first freshman in Lakewood High School history to break 17 minutes in the 5k. The teams will be back in action Saturday, Sept. 13, as they travel to Cleveland Heights for the McDonough Invitational.
The boys’ soccer team traveled to Amherst to face the Comets, suffering a 1-0 loss despite a strong effort and senior goalkeeper Louis Van der Kuil saving eight shots on goal. The team will return to action Wednesday at Westlake to face the Demons.
