Do you need to buy a textbook or a parking pass? Go to the bookroom. Are you struggling to find information on an upcoming school dance? Go to the bookroom. Curious about where to go if you’ve lost your ID and need a replacement? Go to the bookroom.
At Lakewood High School, the bookroom is a haven for students in grades 9-12 to get any questions answered or problems solved in their academic lives. The bookroom houses many student resources, including the attendance office and textbook purchases.
Most recently, head of the bookroom, Pam Williams, stepped down, leaving Asia Mestek to take her place.
Coming from the West Shore office, Mestek has adapted to a new student environment. Her time in the West Shore office was heavily focused on keeping track of attendance and issues involving out-of-district students. “Students come first in all scenarios in my book. Again, it’s why I liked this position. I see you guys come in and out daily. I help you with miscellaneous things in the bookroom,” Mestek said.

Under her guidance, the bookroom continues to be more than just a place for help — it’s a hub of connection. Whether students are there to pick up a form or simply say hello, the bookroom is essential to keep Lakewood High School running smoothly.
Any student could tell you about the welcoming ambiance of it. Students have noticed Mestek’s attention to detail and easy-going nature. “I always feel welcome. Everyone there is super nice. They’re always super patient, helping you with whatever you need,” senior Kirsten Loyd said.
In addition to assisting all students, the bookroom provides a selection of Lakewood merch — from hoodies and sweatpants to hats and pajamas — giving students the chance to show their school spirit.
While managing a different aspect of students’ school life, head of attendance Laura Butterfield views Mestek as a huge help in coordinating student activities. “It ebbs and flows with the time of year. You know, obviously, Homecoming was huge — between the dance, the parade, selling tickets, and scheduling at the beginning of the year,” Butterfield said.
Although they manage completely different parts of student life, Butterfield and Mestek are able to adapt to the changes that come with being a Lakewood Ranger.
Mestek did not start off working entirely with the Rangers. Her story did start at Lakewood High School, but in a very different role from her current one. “I thoroughly enjoyed the idea of this position. It’s student-facing, whereas in the West Shore office, I handled more parent calls and attendance and transportation stuff — which I enjoyed. But, this was an opportunity I knew that wouldn’t come back around in my time with Lakewood,” Mestek said.
As a Lakewood alumna herself, she highly values face-to-face contact with students. As the bookroom is the first office students see when they enter the building, she feels they should feel comfortable coming in with questions or concerns — no matter how big or small.

Most days, students expect emails from Mestek with important information about clubs or upcoming school-wide events. Other times, students can find details about dance tickets or parking permit availability. Given it’s only October, Mestek has provided a well-organized and positive start to the school year. “Again, it is student-focused, and I’m super excited. I want the feedback to know what you guys like and don’t like. I like the interactions, and knowing that I am building something fun for you guys,” Mestek said.
Her dedication to sharing information and her approachable nature have made her a recognized face throughout the high school — a face that all students can trust.
As the colder seasons approach at Lakewood High School, Mestek’s goal remains simple: to continue the bookroom’s legacy as the heartbeat of the school. Her hard work — from West Shore to the bookroom — helping both students and staff doesn’t go unnoticed.
Located at the entrance of the building, the bookroom is a space where organization meets kindness, a place where every student can find the help they need — and a smile.
