In December 2024, Luigi Mangione was involved in the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. Hailed as a hero by many Americans for his criticisms of the U.S. healthcare system, Mangione became a glorified celebrity for millions. As media coverage intensified during the manhunt and following his arrest, many started to notice the excessive attention he received, leading the public to believe that Mangione was being put on display. These sentiments peaked when images of Mangione’s “perp walk” were released online, depicting a lone Mangione escorted by dozens of armed NYC police officers. Critics have pointed out that Mangione has garnered more attention than notorious killers of the past, including the world’s most prolific serial killers, a phenomenon believed to be related to his choice of victim.
