The Rising Star company is different from what we normally feature on the Brew Crew, but it is very special and deserves a story of its own. Rising Star Coffee Roasters has seven locations in the greater Cleveland area, but it is unlikely that any chain cafe is around. Rising Star was founded in 2012 by Kim Jenkins with one cafe and one coffee roaster.
While the business has grown to six locations, one roastery and wholesale production of coffee beans, the principles have stayed true: to bring quality products to the community and to facilitate a positive impact on the industry and supply chain by paying farmers fair prices. In 2020, Jenkins retired and sold his stake, but the cafés, roastery, and core principles of the company live on. Rising Star is a chain that gives back to the community in many ways and continues to run an ethically sourced and morally conscientious business.
Rising Star, located at 13380 Madison Ave, definitely deserves a visit from Lakewoodites. Opened in 2017, their offerings range from lattes and cappuccinos to custom coffee drinks. Frequent customer Logan Ellis shares, “Although I am not a big coffee fan, the pastries and overall vibe of the place make it one of my favorite spots to go get some work done.” You’ll also find creamer and sugar for customizing your drink, and a separate seating area for both socializing and studying. Open 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., it’s a great place for any occasion.

Rising Star is an amazing cafe, but it’s really the beans that stand out—yes, the beans. With sustainability and quality products as key principles, Rising Star’s commitment is evident in its beans. For Rising Star, a cup of coffee starts on a farm, and the company oversees every step of the way until it reaches the customer.
Ethically sourcing beans and farms ensures that quality beans are being processed, roasted, and used, without compromising on fair wages for the farmers and workers. Employee Brandon, who wishes to stay anonymous, said that “something so important to Rising Star is very, very close personal relationships with all of [their] coffee farmers.”
Rising Star also gives back to the community in many ways. Currently, there are food donation boxes in all six Rising Star locations. They are looking for nonperishable items like pastas, grains, canned proteins, boxed cereals, boxed entrees, canned foods, and canned sauces. If you don’t have any food to donate, monetary donations are also accepted.
This initiative was actually started by leadership at the Rising Star Lakewood cafe and has now been implemented in all of their locations. All donations go to the Greater Cleveland Food Bank. The idea came from Phil McHolland, the manager, who felt that with the cutting of SNAP benefits and the current state of the economy, it was crucial to bring the community together to help those in need.

Rising Star is in partnership with other local businesses to provide bakery and some pastry items. Pastries from Blackbird Baking Company, a gluten-free and vegan bakery from Philomena Bake Shop, and a selection of bagels and cream cheese from Cleveland Bagel Company.
The seasonal menu offers a special take on classic fall favorites, while also exploring unique flavor profiles. The pumpkin curry latte, pumpkin thyme latte, spiked apple cider latte, and a smoked and salted maple latte incorporate cultural identities for the diverse community of Lakewood to enjoy. Charlotte Tam, an employee at Rising Star, recommends a chocolate cappuccino with a touch of smoked salt, calling it “absolutely incredible.” There’s definitely something on the menu for everyone.
For a cozy new coffee shop to try, visit Rising Star on Madison Avenue. With locally sourced beans and ingredients, friendly staff, and opportunities for philanthropy, there is absolutely no reason to stop in.
