HDX Embroidery House opened in September 2025, with its distinctive name quickly drawing attention. Owner Hanna Dunphy puts in endless hard work at her store, balancing its launch with the anticipation of having a baby. This did not stop Dunphy from fully renovating the space to create the store as it is now. Hanna Dunphy and her team greet you with open arms as soon as you walk in, ready to help with anything you need.
Before Dunphy opened her storefront, she traveled to local markets and set up a small pop-up shop to showcase her work. As orders started to flow in, things became more serious. Dunphy opened her store right in Lakewood, Ohio, a city known for many small shops. HDX fit right in.
Dunphy said, “[Lakewood has] a lot of young adults that have such a passion for creativity and a true desire to support small businesses… that’s kind of why I nestled down in Lakewood.¨
As you drive past HDX, the name starts to catch your attention for its uniqueness. Dunphy explained the origin of the name: “I kind of would nickname it HD. And when I would collaborate with other local businesses on social media, I would type out HD and then an X.” The name stuck, and she added “Embroidery House” to make its purpose clear.
HDX started growing fast, and Dunphy got her best friend, Maribeth Herrilko, to start helping her around the store. As the store manager, Herrilko ensures everything is in order and running smoothly.

Herrilko shares, “When someone walks in, I can kind of guide them throughout our store and let them know what we offer.” The shop’s environment really draws customers in.
Olivia Brugnoni, a high school student who visited the store with her female entrepreneurship and marketing class, attested to the atmosphere. “I love this shop, it’s definitely more my vibe and she talked about a lot about how she got there when we met her,” Brugnoni stated.
While things in the store get busy with online and in-store orders, Dunphy makes sure that everything is still perfect under all that pressure. Brugnoni said, “It’s like a well-oiled machine.” Dunphy and Herrilko’s strong friendship contributes to their effective teamwork.
Dunphy shares, “But looking at my business now, alongside my wonderful employees that I have, and my amazing family that I’ve been growing…. I think that’s my biggest accomplishment so far.” Even having a baby did not stop her from pouring her passion and welcoming spirit into the store.
Dunphy’s inspiration for starting embroidery came largely from her children. Dunphy stated she wanted “to be able to create something that I had the freedom to navigate through my crazy life.”
The store offers lots of different pictures and colors, so you could get a hoodie or even bring in your own thing to get embroidered. She and the team make sure anything you get done at the store is always perfect.

The spirit of supporting local businesses is strong within HDX. Dunphy previously collaborated with other small stores, and she noted that Brugnoni herself had a small business. “She has a little nail salon right in the front of her house, which was super cute,” Dunphy shared.
To promote both their efforts, Brugnoni had Dunphy embroider some merchandise. Brugnoni stated, “I got one hat that said nails by liv and one sweatshirt that said nails by liv.” As the merch caught the attention of her family and friends, they also wanted to purchase items to support both businesses.
“Something I love about Lakewood is that every small local business is looking out for each other,” Herrilko said.
Lakewood is known for having many small local shops, and many people travel from everywhere to visit these businesses. Brugnoni said, “I would definitely recommend it to people, especially people who are looking for detailed embroidery…. She’s very detailed with it; you can customize it so many ways.” Dunphy’s attention to design detail in her work is never overlooked.
Every piece of Dunphy’s work is infused with dedication and love. The small shop she has built is thriving thanks to the hard work of the owner and the supportive small business community of Lakewood.
