Lakewood’s Charitable Assistance Corporation (LCAC) holds several annual food drives, but its most successful are the Thanksgiving and holiday drives. LCAC food drives have large community turnouts, full of people eager to help Lakewood’s families and seniors.

This year, Lakewood High School’s Student-Athlete Leadership Team (SALT) joined the movement. The drive was a two-day process. On the first night, the volunteers collected and bagged up the food. Then, on the second day, there were multiple phases, including unloading the truck, packing new bags, organizing premade bags and then distributing the deliveries.
Jan Burns, an LCAC board member, brought high energy and holiday spirit to the event.
“I was beyond joyful to see so many people attend and offer to help,” Burns said. “It is a testament to the good in the world, which at times seems to be shattered.”
For Burns, the motivation to volunteer came when a friend introduced her to this powerful organization.
“After volunteering at a food drive, I became aware of the food insecurity and that this organization was efficient and well prepared to meet the needs of the community,” she said.
The SALT members were also driven to be involved and part of the solution. Mia Dugan, a member of SALT, enjoys the rewarding feeling of helping out in this event.
“I think it’s an amazing feeling to be able to use our hands, get out there, deliver food, and truly make a difference,” Dugan said. “I feel like giving to those who might not have all the resources around this time of year will spread love and cheer and make it a better holiday season.”

Lyla Parkison, another member of the SALT team, could not agree more and emphasized how the event helps students remember the meaning of the holidays.
“A lot of people think about this season for the gifts, but really, it’s about sharing and giving back to the community,” Parkison said. “It’s great to see all of the smiling faces who are happy and eager to help.”
The SALT team and others who were involved were successful in their efforts. Over 300 families and 100 seniors received holiday meals. They were greeted at their doors by a smile and received a package made with love. This event turned many people’s seasons around and gave them the joy and resources that they deserve.
The LCAC continues to offer volunteer opportunities throughout the year for those looking to make a difference in the Lakewood community.
