Lakewood High School’s girls lacrosse team is taking a step forward by adding a third coach to its staff. Ashley Heckler English joins veteran head coach Michelle Blauman to bolster player development, refine team strategies, and foster a competitive environment as the program continues to grow.
The decision to expand the coaching staff comes amid increasing interest in girls’ lacrosse at Lakewood High School. In recent years, the team has seen a steady rise in participation numbers, growing from roughly twenty players to fifty. This is accompanied by players’ desire to elevate their skills and compete at a higher level. The addition of English, who brings a wealth of experience both on and off the field, is seen as an addition to support this momentum.
Michelle Blauman, who led the team last year in her first season with Lakewood, expressed optimism about the new coaching hire. “Ashley’s background in coaching and her dedication to the sport will bring a fresh perspective to our team,” she said. “We’re always looking for ways to improve, and having an additional coach will help us focus on individual player development while also strengthening our overall team strategy and culture. And help me out with how fast this team is growing!”

Blauman spent her first year building a strong foundation for the program, emphasizing skill development and sportsmanship. She noted that adding English aligns with the team’s goals of creating a competitive, inclusive environment that encourages growth at all levels.
As a former college lacrosse player at the College of Wooster, English is excited to join the Lakewood High School staff. Her background includes coaching at various youth levels and playing for a Division III college team, where she gained valuable insights into the game’s technical and strategic aspects.
“I’m thrilled to be part of the Lakewood girls lacrosse program,” English said. “My goal is to help the players improve their skills, build confidence, and enjoy the game. I believe in creating a positive and encouraging environment where players can thrive.”
English’s approach emphasizes fundamentals, tactical awareness, and fostering a team-oriented mindset. She plans to work closely with Blauman to develop practice plans, prepare game strategies, and support individual athletes’ growth.
Senior captain Vashti Arrow, who has been with the team for four years, expressed enthusiasm about the new coaching staff. “Having Coach Ashley join us is really exciting,” Arrow said. “She’s passionate about the game and genuinely cares about helping us get better. It’s motivating to have that extra support.”
Arrow also highlighted the team’s aspirations for the upcoming season. “We want to compete at a higher level and make a run in the playoffs. With the new coaching addition, I think we’re in a strong position to do that,” she said.
Practices began two weeks ago with coaches focusing on technical skills, conditioning, and team cohesion. The coaching staff is also working to schedule scrimmages and tournaments to prepare for the regular season, including their first game Friday, March 13th at 7 p.m. at Garfield Middle School.

Blauman and English expressed confidence that their combined efforts will help the team reach new heights. “We’re committed to creating a positive environment where players can develop their skills and enjoy the sport,” Blauman said. “The enthusiasm and dedication of our athletes, combined with the support of our coaching staff, will be key to our success.”
As lacrosse continues to grow in popularity across the region, Lakewood High School’s girls team is positioning itself as a program on the rise. With a new coach on board and a dedicated team, Lakewood High School’s girls lacrosse program is poised for a successful season. The collaboration between Blauman and English aims to develop well-rounded athletes and instill a lifelong love for the game. As the team prepares to hit the field, all eyes will be on how this new coaching dynamic influences their performance and growth in the coming months.
