A Community Fundraiser
The students and the community of Lakewood went out on Saturday, March 7, to Applebee’s for the annual Rangers for a Cure pancake breakfast fundraiser. This was a major event for the Rangers for a Cure campaign at the high school. The breakfast allowed families and community members to support the cause while enjoying pancakes, sausage, juice, and coffee.
The pancake breakfast event was designed to bring the Lakewood community together while contributing to the overall fundraising efforts for Ranges for a Cure. By participating in the event, residents were able to support the cause and the students who worked to organize it.
Planning the Event
Students involved with Rangers for Cure joined forces with the teachers and other staff at Lakewood High School to plan the fundraiser.
“We’ve been working on our campaign since July of last year,” said Lydia Koons, a student visionary for Rangers for a Cure, “We only started working on the pancake fundraiser in January.”
Planning the event included organizing ingredients, cooking equipment, and seating for guests. Students were also responsible for promoting the fundraiser to make the community aware of the event.
Student Volunteers at Work

Student volunteers played an important role during the breakfast. Many of the students involved were members of the Rangers for a Cure group and volunteered their time to help the event run smoothly.
Students waited tables and checked on guests throughout the morning to make sure they had everything they needed. Others helped bring plates of pancakes and sausage to tables.
The Breakfast Begins
The breakfast began at 8 a.m., and guests arrived at Applebee’s to support the fundraiser. Families, students, and other community members brought tickets to show they were attending the event.
The cooking stations were still operational as the volunteers continued to make more pancakes to feed the guests attending the breakfast. There was a smell of freshly made pancakes as the volunteers went around the tables and seats, serving the guests their breakfast.
“The only hard part is for the cooks in the back getting everything prepared and ready.” Says Emma Forrest, a worker at Applebee’s, “They came in at 6 am this morning to get stuff ready, and they’re still going.”
Supporting Rangers for a Cure

Rangers for a Cure is an annual initiative organized by students at Lakewood High School. Students take part in different activities throughout the year to raise money for cancer research and spread awareness about the effects of cancer.
“[I enjoyed] seeing all the people that support blood cancer [awareness] and seeing all the money that is going to be raised towards blood cancer.” Says Luke Boland, a supporter who attended the breakfast for Rangers for a Cure.
The pancake breakfast is one of the events students look forward to each year. It encourages community members to participate in the fundraising process while supporting an important cause. Students also gain experience organizing events and working together to support families affected by cancer.
Bringing the Community Together
By the end of the morning, many community members had attended the event and contributed to the fundraising efforts. Students also helped clean up after the breakfast.
The Rangers for a Cure pancake breakfast remains an important event at Lakewood High School. It continues to raise money for cancer research while strengthening the sense of community in Lakewood.
