    Oprah 2020?

The 75th Golden Globe Awards, on Sunday, January 7, brought with it Oprah Winfrey’s receiving of the Cecil B. DeMille award, the first African-American woman to be honored with it. Her acceptance speech ended to the tune of thunderous applause and a standing ovation, with murmurs of “Oprah 2020” beginning to make their way onto the internet.

Winfrey’s speech aimed at empowering women, as was the goal of the celebrities that evening who donned black dresses and “Time’s Up” pins. According to the Washington Post, she told women to keep their heads held high, saying, “I want all the girls watching here to know that a new day is on the horizon.”

Although Golden Globes host Seth Meyers had made a joking comment about Winfrey running for president in 2020 and many others have since her speech, the idea has morphed into something more serious.

“Nothing but respect for MY president!” reads a Twitter post with a picture of Winfrey beneath it. Meanwhile, people are already busy coming up with campaign slogans and logos.

Winfrey has yet to make a statement regarding running for president, but CNN reports that two anonymous sources have come forward and claimed that those close to her are suggesting that she run for office.

However, her best friend, Gayle King, believes that Winfrey “is not going to be running for president…. I also say… you also have the right to change your mind.”

In opposition to King’s statement, Stedman Graham, Winfrey’s partner, has told the Los Angeles Times, “it’s up to the people. She would absolutely do it.”

With statements coming in from both sides, only time and Oprah Winfrey will tell what may lie ahead in the 2020 elections.

Is another TV show personality right for our country? How much opposition will Winfrey face from the Democratic party itself? Will her inexperience make it hard for her to succeed? These and other questions are also being considered, and the American people must find the answers if Oprah Winfrey plans on running for president.
