    Met-Gala 2018

    Met-Gala 2018

The Met Gala, fashions biggest night of the year, occurred May 7th at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The gathering of A-list models, musicians, and movie stars had been dubbed “the Oscars of the East Coast.” Each year, the event marks the grand opening of the Costume Institute’s annual fashion exhibit. This year’s theme was “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination.”

It wasn’t a Saints or Sinner Halloween Party, it was the first Monday in May, but a viewer could have been forgiven for getting the two confused. The dress code was “Sunday Best,” and never have boldfaced named raced so wholeheartedly toward a theme. Tickets are said to coast $30,000 each or $275,000 for a table, but all guests must be invited–ruling out all but the most elite Hollywood actors, music superstars, top models, and fashion designers.

Guests remained very loyal to the theme: Rihanna wore a papal outfit, Greta Gerwig wore a nun-like ensemble, Ariana Grande wore a gown printed with the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, and Zendaya wore literal armor inspired by Joan of Arc.

Although the Vatican hap approved of the exhibit, many people still deemed the theme sacrilegious and offensive to their faith.

“We know it could be controversial for right wing or conservative Catholics and for liberal Catholics,” head curator Andrew Bolton told the New York Times. He further clarified the exhibit focuses “on a shared hypothesis about what we call the Catholic imagination and the way it has engaged artists and designers and shaped their approach to creativity, as opposed to any kind of theology..”

Other highlights include rapper 2 chainz getting down on one knee on the famous Met gala stairs and popped the question to Kesha Ward, with whom he has three children.

She said yes, though it was unclear if this was the rappers original proposal.
