As the season progresses the girls’ varsity tennis team remains undefeated. The team has a current record of 7-0, including three 5-0 sweeps.

Second singles player and fourth year team member Erin Kelly stands undefeated as she comes off of her seventh consecutive win. Alongside Kelly is Lakewood’s first doubles team Clare Harvey and Molly Roche as they too have a personal record of 7-0.

Aside from a winning record, the team also took first place in the 2018 Lakewood Doubles Tournament for a second consecutive year since its reinstatement in 2017.

Singles players Ally Latham and Erin Kelly joined forces and won first place as a doubles team. This season, Lakewood came in first followed by North Olmsted, and then Midview. The two-day event took place on August 15th and 16th at the LHS courts. Third singles player Sarah Yonkers says that, “the doubles tournament gave us a good boost as we entered the season.”

The team is constantly working, holding a match or practice every week Monday through Friday. This hard work is paying off as the team recently defeated Avon Lake for the first time in a number of years. First doubles player Clare Harvey attributes this success to the, “hours of time we all put into offseason training,” she adds, “we are all very supportive of one another.”

Additionally, varsity Coach Lucy Finnegan believes that, “we have a team of 7 very strong players, five of which are returning members which gives us a major advantage. The girls are very focused in practice and show great mental toughness,” adding, “it is very exciting!”

Experience is a key benefit as the team currently has six returning senior players. This experience has proved invaluable as the team has been able to grow together and improve with each season. The team is in great shape as the SWC Championship approaches; we can expect great things to come for the girls varsity tennis team!
