By a 60-35, the infamous “Heartbeat Bill,” passes the Ohio House of Representatives. It now is on its way to the state Senate.

What exactly is this bill, one might wonder? In 2016, Governor John Kasich worked on further curtailing abortion rights in Ohio. He signed into law a ban on abortions after 20 weeks. He, however, blocked what is known to us as the “Heartbeat Bill,” a legislation that bans abortions after six weeks, or when fetuses have a detectable heartbeat.

Previously, the House did not have the majority to override the veto. They now do.

Christina Hagan, a Republican representative, is the bill’s primary sponsor and represents District 50 in Ohio’s State House of Representatives. She sees it as a means to “revisit” Roe v. Wade, the court decision that legalized abortion nationally. They see it as saving thousands of lives.

If she fails to take into considerations the state’s current predicaments, then I shall spell them out. This bill acknowledges only the mother’s sake in cases where an emergency abortion is needed to save the mother’s life pr if the pregnancy cannot be carried out to term. Incest and rape are not an exception.

But let’s look at poverty. Teenage pregnancy. Insurance of the child.

Now let’s go first. She says this can save 17,00 infants in the state of Ohio a year. Where will they go, one has to wonder? In a state where, in 2015, we had over 13,000 children in out-of-home care. 44% will be put back into their families. Families they were removed from due to neglect or physical, verbal, sexual abuse. A state were, from 2014 to 2015, we had a 5.1% decrease in adoption.

This is in a state where family assistance runs at over 244,000 receiving help from WIC. Where a million children live under the poverty line.

Tell me who you are saving, when you ignore the fact that there are living children struggling? Families struggling. How a majority of abortions are people who already have a family? Where they do it out of necessity of inability to take care and knowing the system can’t do it either.

We are running at a deficit of resources for children, not a surplus. So stop thinking because you can raise your twins at ease with your college education, present father, and 60,000 a year income…that your state is okay. Who are you saving? Infants?

Then who is going to save the kids already born and living in food insecure homes? Because that’s 17% of your state, Mrs. Hagan.
